The word "only" is used often in speaking and writing. Many people use it incorrectly, and this can change the meaning of what they are saying.

The word "only" is a modifier. It should be placed in front of the noun, verb, or phrase you are trying to modify.

Here are 5 examples, and the only thing different about them is the position of the word "only". But each example means something different!

Example 5: "Fred likes drinking Corona beer only". This means that Fred likes to drink just beer made by Corona, not Corona lemonade or Corona whiskey. "Only" modifies "beer". It is placed after "beer" because "beer" is the last word in the sentence.

"The storm only damaged 3 houses" = the storm damaged them, it didn't burn them or blow them away. What the writer probably meant was that only 3 houses were damaged, not 4 or 5. So "only" should modify "3": "The storm damaged only 3 houses."

To summarise: if you want to use "only" in a sentence, work out which word you want it to modify, and put it immediately in front of that word (or behind it, if it's the last word in the sentence).

The word "only" is so often put in the wrong place (usually before a verb), it sounds strange when you put it in the correct place! This is another example of "perfect" English compared with "everyday" English, as you learned in Lesson 26.

As examples, so many people say, "I only eat..." / "I only buy..." / "I only like..." and so on, when they mean, "I eat only..." / "I buy only..." / "I like only..." these incorrect forms have become normal.
