Lesson 111: Ways to Describe Quantity or Degree

Here are different ways in which you can talk about a quantity, or a degree, of something. 在这里，您可以用不同的方式谈论事物的数量或程度。

They are arranged in approximately ascending order of degree. 它们以大约升序排列。

insignificant 微不足道

Example: Scientists assure us that the contamination of the water supply will be insignificant. 例子：科学家向我们保证，供水的污染将是微不足道的。

a tiny bit / a teeny bit 一点点

Example: Fred is not interested in ballet, not even a tiny bit! 例子：弗雷德对芭蕾舞不感兴趣，甚至一点都不感兴趣！

markedly 明显地

Example: In Melbourne, the weather can change markedly during just a single day. 示例：在墨尔本，天气可能会在短短一天内发生明显变化。 The English saying is "We can have four seasons in one day." 俗话说：“我们一天可以有四个季节。”

pretty (this not only means "beautiful", but is also used to describe degree) 漂亮（这不仅意味着“美丽”，而且还用于描述程度）

Example: Fred complains that work has been pretty busy the last few days. 示例：Fred抱怨最近几天工作很忙。

many 许多

Example: In Australia, flooding is a fact of life for many farmers. 例如：在澳大利亚，洪水是许多农民的生活现实。

lots 很多

Example: You were right! That was lots of fun. 例子：您说得对！那很有趣。

a lot 很多

a good deal 丰

highly 高度

Example: Dogs' noses are highly sensitive and can be used to sniff out drugs and even banknotes. 示例：狗的鼻子非常敏感，可用于嗅探毒品甚至钞票。

very much 非常

Example: "To give your right arm" = to want something very much. 例子：“给你的右臂”=非常想要一些东西。

a ton of 一吨

Example: SBS received a ton of complaints about last night's news reporting. 示例：SBS收到了大量关于昨晚新闻报道的投诉。

heaps 大量

Example: There were heaps of things to see at the Railway Museum - we didn't have time for everything! 示例：在铁路博物馆有很多景点可以看到-我们没有时间做所有事情！

an awful lot 大量

Example: To get an awful lot done = to do a very large amount of work. 例子：要完成很多工作=做大量工作。

oodles of (nothing to do with noodles, this strange word is used to describe degree!) 大量（与面条无关，这个奇怪的词用来描述程度！）

Example: There were oodles of things to see at the Railway Museum - we didn't have time for everything! 例子：在铁路博物馆里有很多东西可以看-我们没有时间去做所有的事情！

extremely 高度

Example: To cost an arm and a leg = Extremely expensive. 例子：花费一条胳膊和一条腿=极其昂贵。

tremendously 非常

Example: It is tremendously important that the Government helps the economy to adapt to climate change. 例子：政府帮助经济适应气候变化非常重要。

totally 完全

Example: This small country town is totally unaffected by tourism - for now! 例子：这个小乡村小镇现在完全不受旅游业的影响！

completely 完全地

Example: "Too right!" = I agree with you completely. 例子：“太对了！” 我完全同意你的意见。

entirely 完全
