Setting the Table

Here's how to set a table for a basic meal (a main course plus a dessert course) using Western cutlery.

Each place at the table needs:
a dinner plate 一个餐盘
a knife 一把刀
a drinking glass.

Put the dinner plate at the centre of the place setting.

On the left of the plate, place the fork, prongs pointing up.

On the right of the plate, place the knife, sharp edge facing toward the plate.

To the right of the knife place the spoon, with the drinking glass above it.

For more complicated meals:

If there is an "entree" (= a course before the main course), put the entree fork to the left of the main fork and put the entree knife to the right of the main knife.

In that way, your guests start using the outermost cutlery first, and work inwards.
