One or more letters of the alphabet makes an English word. Words are separated by spaces. One or more words makes a sentence.

In this sentence, the first three words are "In", "this" and "sentence".

The first word in a sentence usually starts with a capital letter. The last word usually ends with a full-stop. Refer to Lesson 2 for a list of special characters, such as a full-stop, used in English.

The shortest words in English are "a" and "I". The longest is "pneumono-ultra-microscopic-silico-volcano-coniosis".

Unlike many languages including pinyin, there are no letter "accents" in English.

字母A,E,I,O和U称为元音。

The letters A, E, I, O and U are called vowels. They are soft sounds made with an open airway. All other letters of the alphabet are called consonents. They are harder, more percussive sounds.
