Lesson 43: Words that are Both Adjectives and Adverbs

In this lesson you will learn some words that are both adjectives and adverbs, with no change of spelling.

Some adjectives formed by adding –ly to nouns are also used as adverbs. 通过在名词上添加-ly形成的一些形容词也被用作副词。

Examples: early, daily, weekly, yearly, hourly, quarterly, half-yearly etc. 示例:早期,每日,每周,每年,每小时,每季度,每半年等。

Remember, adjectives describe nouns and adverbs describe verbs and sometimes describe adjectives.

WEEKLY 每周

This is a weekly magazine. The adjective "weekly" describes (modifies) the noun "magazine". 这是一本周刊。 形容词“每周”描述(修饰)名词“杂志”。

The magazine is published weekly. The adverb "weekly" modifies the verb "published". 该杂志每周出版。 副词“每周”修饰动词“已发布”。

EARLY 早

Fred caught an early bus. The adjective "early" modifies the noun "bus". 弗雷德赶上了早班车。 形容词“早期”修饰名词“公共汽车”。

Alice arrived at the meeting early. The adverb "early" modifies the verb "arrived". 爱丽丝很早就到了会场。 副词“早期”修饰动词“到达”。

Here are more examples. 这是更多的例子。

Please note that some adjectives have become adverbs through popular use, and are not grammatically correct. 请注意,一些形容词已成为流行使用的副词,并且语法不正确。

"Fast" for example, which in modern English is used to mean "quickly". 例如,“快速”,在现代英语中用来表示“快速”。

"Clean" should really be said as "cleanly". “干净”应该被称为“干净”。

"Loud" should be said as "loudly". “大声”应该说是“大声”。

"Quick" should be "quickly". “快速”应该“快速”。

Unfortunately most people have become lazy and poorly educated in correct English. 不幸的是,大多数人都变得懒惰而且教育水平不正确。

BACK 向后

We left the house through the back door. The adjective "back" modifies the noun "door". 我们通过后门离开了房子。 形容词“back”修饰名词“door”。

BETTER 更好

Muriel is a better cook than Frank. The adjective "better" modifies the noun "cook". 穆里尔是比弗兰克更好的厨师。 形容词“更好”修饰名词“厨师”。

Alice programs better than Sandra. The adverb "better" modifies the verb "programs". 爱丽丝的节目比桑德拉(Sandra)好。 副词“更好”修饰动词“程序”。

CLEAN 清洁

Their kitchen is spotlessly clean. The adjective "clean" modifies the noun "kitchen". 他们的厨房一尘不染。 形容词“干净”修饰了名词“厨房”。

The chess players were warned to play the game clean. The adverb "clean" (should be "cleanly") modifies the verb "play". 国际象棋棋手被警告保持比赛整洁。 副词“干净”(应该是“干净地”)修饰动词“玩”。

CLEAR 明确

She has a clear complexion. The adjective "clear" modifies the noun "complexion". 她的肤色很明显。 形容词“清”修饰了名词“肤色”。

They flew clear across Australia. The adverb "clear" modifies the verb "flew". 他们飞越澳大利亚。 副词“真”修饰动词“飞翔”。

ENOUGH 足够

We have enough food to last a week. The adjective "enough" modifies the noun "food". 我们有足够的食物可以持续一周。 形容词“足够”修饰名词“食物”。

Have you eaten enough? The adverb "enough" modifies the verb "eaten". 你吃够了吗? 副词“足够”修饰动词“吃掉”。

FAST 快速

Fred drives a fast car. The adjective "fast" modifies the noun "car". 弗雷德驾驶一辆快车。 形容词“fast”修饰名词“car”。

Fred drove his car fast. The adverb "fast" ("quickly" would be better English) modifies the verb "drove". 弗雷德快速开车。 副词“快”(“快速”会更好英语)修饰动词“开车”。

HALF 减半

The partners will have half shares in their new business. The adjective "half" modifies the noun "shares". 合伙人将拥有新业务的一半股份。 形容词“half”修饰名词“shares”。

David was half running, half walking. The adverb "half" modifies the verbs "running" and "walking". 大卫跑了一半,走了一半。 副词“half”修饰动词“running”和“walking”。

Ali is half Dutch and half Indonesian. The adverb "half" modifies the adjectives "Dutch" and "Indonesian". Note that this is an adverb modifying an adjective. 阿里一半是荷兰人,一半是印尼人。 副词“ half”修饰形容词“ Dutch”和“ Indonesian”。 请注意,这是修饰形容词的副词。

HARD 硬

JUST 公正

LATE 晚

She worked late. The adverb "late" modifies the verb "worked". 她工作到很晚。 副词“迟到”修饰动词“工作”。

LITTLE 小

Sandra lives in a little house. The adjective "little" modifies the noun "house". 桑德拉(Sandra)住在一个小房子里。 形容词“little”修饰了名词“house”。

The scientist is little known outside Monash University. The adverb "little" modifies the verb "known". 这位科学家在莫纳什大学之外鲜为人知。 副词“little”修饰动词“known”。

LOUD 响

Her voice is loud. The adjective "loud" modifies the noun "voice". 她的声音响亮。 形容词“响亮”修饰了名词“声音”。

Why are you talking so loud? The adverb "loud' ("loudly" would be better English) modifies the verb "talking". 你为什么这么大声说话? 副词“响亮”(“大声”会更好的英语)修饰动词“说话”。

LOW 低

Our supplies of influenza vaccine are low. The Adjective "low" modifies the noun "supplies". 我们的流感疫苗供应量很低。 形容词“低”修饰名词“供应”。

The helicopter flew low over the trees. The adverb "low" modifies the verb "flew". 直升机低空飞过树林。 副词“低”修饰动词“飞行”。

ONLY 单独的

She is an only child. The adjective "only" modifies the noun "child". 她是独生子女。 形容词“only”修饰名词“child”。

When the snake appeared, I could only scream. The adverb "only" modifies the verb "scream". 当蛇出现时,我只能尖叫。 副词“only”修饰动词“scream”。

QUICK 快

He is quick. The adjective "quick" modifies the noun "he". (Actually, "he" is a pronoun, not a noun - see Lesson 50 to learn about pronouns. ) 他很快。 形容词“quick”修饰名词“he”。 (实际上,“他”是代名词,而不是名词 - 请参阅第50课以了解代词。)

STRAIGHT 直

Can you give me a straight answer? The adjective "straight" modifies the noun "answer". The word "straight" here doesn't mean "not curved". It means "directly answering the question". 你能给我一个直接的答案吗? 形容词“直”修饰名词“答案”。 这里的“直”一词并不意味着“不弯曲”。 它的意思是“直接回答问题”。
