Lesson 46: More Verbs - The Weather

Note: all of these verbs have meanings other than the weather, and John tells you these.

BLOW 吹 / 刮

blow (v) 吹: To move air around, especially as a burst or puff. 移动空气,特别是爆裂或抽吸。

"To blow up" = to inflate, or to destroy with explosives. “炸毁”=膨胀,或用炸药摧毁。

"To blow hard" = to be very windy, or to breathe deeply after exercise, or to be a boastful and talkative person (a "blowhard"). “努力打击”=风很大,或者在运动后深呼吸,或者是一个自夸和健谈的人(“吹牛”)。

I/you/we/they/ blow, he/she/it/ blows.
/am/is/are/ blowing.
/all/ blew (note spelling, irregular verb).

Examples: It's blowing hard today. 例子:今天很难吹。

We blew up 50 balloons for a party. 我们为派对炸了50个气球。

Last week terrorists blew up a mosque. 上周,恐怖分子炸毁了一座清真寺。

Frank was blowing hard when he reached the top of the hill. 当弗兰克到达山顶时,他正在努力地吹着。

The union organiser was a bit of a blowhard. 工会组织者有点吹嘘。

DRIZZLE 霂 / 溟 / 挹

drizzle (v) 霂: To rain very lightly, not much more than a mist. 非常轻微地下雨,不仅仅是雾气。

To very lightly pour a liquid over something. 轻轻地将液体倒在某物上。

I/you/we/they/ drizzle, he/she/it/ drizzles.

/am/is/are/ drizzling (note spelling, no E).

/all/ drizzled (note spelling, single E).

/was/were/ drizzling

/shall/will/ drizzle

/shall/will/ be drizzling.

Examples: Take your raincoat, it's drizzling, turning to rain later. 例子:拿雨衣,下着毛毛雨,以后再下雨。

Muriel drizzled olive oil onto a salad. 穆里尔把橄榄油淋在沙拉上。

FLOOD 淹没 / 泛滥

flood (v) 淹没: To cause something to be filled or covered with water, more than rivers, drains etc can handle. 要使某些东西被填满或被水覆盖,不仅仅是河流,排水沟等都可以处理。

"To flood with light" = to cause a lot of light to illiminate a place. “用光照射”=使大量的光线照亮一个地方。

"To flood the market" = to fill a retail market with too much of something. “淹没市场”=为零售市场填补过多的东西。

/am/is/are/ flooding.
/all/ flooded.

/shall/will/ be flooding.

Examples: in Australia, flooding is a fact of life for many farmers. 例如:在澳大利亚,洪水是许多农民的生活现实。

She pulled back the curtains and the room flooded with light. 她拉开窗帘,房间里充满了光线。

Poor-quality electric heaters are flooding the market. 质量差的电加热器正在涌入市场。

HAIL 雹 / 欢呼 / 招呼

hail (v) 欢呼: To drop pellets of ice from the sky. 从天上掉下冰粒。

To call out to, or wave your arms at, someone or something. 呼唤,或挥动你的手臂,某人或某物。

I/you/we/they/ hail, he/she/it/ hails.
/am/is/are/ hailing.
/all/ hailed.
/was/were/ hailing.
/shall/will/ hail.
/shall/will/ be hailing.

Examples: The weather forecast says it will hail later. 示例:天气预报显示它将在以后欢呼。

Last month Sydney had a big problem with golfball-sized hail damaging roofs and vehicles and injuring people. 上个月,悉尼在高尔夫球大小的冰雹损坏屋顶和车辆以及伤人方面遇到了严重问题。

Frank walked onto the road and hailed a taxi. 弗兰克走上马路,叫了一辆出租车。

POUR 倾 / 倾倒 / 浇

pour (v) 浇: To rain very heavily. 非常下雨。

To move a liquid from one container to a container placed underneath. 将液体从一个容器移动到位于下方的容器中。

I/you/we/they/ pour, he/she/it/ pours.
/am/is/are/ pouring.
/all/ poured.
/was/were/ pouring.
/shall/will/ pour.
/shall/will/ be pouring.

Examples: just as we arrived at the park, it poured. 例子:就在我们到达公园时,它倒了。

Frank carefully poured some petrol into his motor-mower. 弗兰克小心翼翼地将一些汽油倒入他的电动割草机中。

RAIN 下雨 / 霅

rain (v) 下雨: To drop water from the sky, as "drops" or "droplets". 从天空中滴水,如“滴”或“水滴”。

To give a lot of praise (or the opposite, criticism) to someone. 给某人一些赞美(或相反的批评)。

"To rain on their parade" = to spoil someone's celebration. “在他们的游行中下雨”=破坏某人的庆祝活动。

/am/is/are/ raining.
/all/ rained.

/shall/will/ rain.
/shall/will/ be raining.

Examples: it rained for two days in Melbourne, and many roads flooded. 例子:在墨尔本下雨了两天,许多道路都被洪水淹没了。

Praise rained on the tennis player who won Wimbledon. 对赢得温网的网球运动员赞不绝口。

The Budget Speech was to be a great achievement for the Treasurer, but bad economic news rained on her parade. 财政预算案演讲对财务主任来说是一项伟大的成就,但在她的游行中,经济新闻不佳。

SHINE 闪耀 / 发光 / 照射 / 耀眼

shine (v) 闪耀: To produce light and perhaps heat. 产生光和热量。

To polish the surface of something so it reflects light. 抛光某物的表面,使其反射光线。

To appear and be noticed as very good at some task. 出现并被注意到非常擅长某项任务。

"To shine through" = to overcome obstacles to accomplish a task. “透过”=克服障碍完成任务。

I/you/we/they/ shine, he/she/it/ shines.
/am/is/are/ shining (note spelling, no E).
/all/ shone (note spelling, irregular verb) [US: shined].
/was/were/ shining.
/shall/will/ shine.

Examples: the Sun shone strongly all day. 例子:太阳一整天都很强烈。

Frank carefully shone his shoes before going to the dance. 弗兰克在去跳舞之前小心翼翼地擦了擦鞋子。

David shone at the sports meeting, winning three races. 大卫在运动会上大放异彩,赢得了三场比赛。

The nurse's compassion shone through the inhumanity of the war zone. 护士的同情心在战区的非人性中闪耀。

SNOW 雪

snow (v) 下雪了: To drop soft white pieces of ice (called "snowflakes") from the sky. 从天空中掉落柔软的白色冰块(称为“雪花”)。

To attempt to fool or confuse somebody with too much information. 试图愚弄或混淆某人太多的信息。

I/you/we/they/ snow, he/she/it/ snows.
/am/is/are/ snowing.
/all/ snowed.
/was/were/ snowing.
/shall/will/ snow.
/shall/will/ be snowing.

Examples: It rarely snows in Melbourne, just an occasional light dusting on Mount Dandenong. 例如:它很少在墨尔本下雪,只是在丹德农山上偶尔发出轻微的灰尘。

Are you snowing me? 你在下雪吗?

SWELTER 发汗

swelter (v) 发汗: To be very hot. 要非常热。

I/you/we/they/ swelter, he/she/it/ swelters.
/am/is/are/ sweltering.
/all/ sweltered.
/was/were/ sweltering.
/shall/will/ swelter.
/shall/will/ be sweltering.

Example: two days ago we absolutely sweltered! Now it's cold! 例子:两天前我们绝对闷热! 现在很冷!

THUNDER 雷 / 雷声 / 咆哮

thunder (v) 雷: To produce a loud banging or rumbling sound during a storm, because of lightning flashes. 由于闪电,在风暴期间产生响亮的敲击或隆隆声。

To make a continuous loud noise. 发出持续的巨响。

To talk in a loud, rumbling voice. 用吵闹的声音说话。

"To steal someone's thunder" = to steal their idea for your benefit, or to steal their public attention. “窃取某人的雷声”=为了你的利益窃取他们的想法,或者窃取他们的公众注意力。

I/you/we/they/ thunder, he/she/it/ thunders.
/am/is/are/ thundering.
/all/ thundered.
/was/were/ thundering.
/shall/will/ thunder.
/shall/will/ be thundering.

Examples: it thundered all night, and we couldn't sleep for the row. 例子:它整晚都在咆哮,我们无法入睡。

I couldn't hear her for the thunder of the waterfall. 我听不到瀑布的雷声。

The politician thundered his criticism of the Government during a TV appearance. 在电视上露面时,这位政治家大肆批评他对政府的批评。

Peter was about to present an economics report, but David stole his thunder with a better one. 彼得即将提交一份经济学报告,但大卫以更好的方式偷走了他的雷声。
