One difficulty for people learning English is the large number of words with multiple meanings. This is the first of two lessons teaching you about more than 40 such words.

You have come across some of them earlier in this course. For example, the noun "coach" = a more comfortable bus used for longer trips.

However this is only one meaning of "coach". This lesson teaches you many meanings for each word: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

BASE 基础 / 基地 / 垒

base (n) bases (pl): The bottom part of something. 某事的底部。

The main place for a business or organisation. 企业或组织的主要场所。

A place where you can stay and explore a region. 您可以在这里住宿并探索一个地区。

A place where members of the "armed forces" (= military) live. “武装部队”(军队)成员居住的地方。

One of four positions at the corners of a square, in the game of baseball. 在棒球比赛中,在广场角落的四个位置之一。

The main activity by which a person or country earns money. 一个人或国家赚钱的主要活动。

The foundation of a counting system. 计数系统的基础。

"customer base" = the set of people who buy from a business. “客户群”=从企业购买的一组人。

"knowledge base" = a collection of information about an object or subject. “知识库”=关于对象或主题的信息集合。

base (adj) 贱: Without honour. For metals, of little value. 没有荣誉。 对于金属来说,价值不大。

basely (adv) 卑鄙: In a way without honour. In a despicable manner. 在没有荣誉的方式。 以卑鄙的方式。

beam (n), beams (pl): A straight line of light shining from a torch, searchlight, laser or lighthouse. 从火炬,探照灯,激光或灯塔照射的直线光线。

A straight line of particles generated by a particle accelerator or X-ray machine. 由粒子加速器或X射线机产生的直线粒子。

"The beam" = A long, straight wooden bar used for gymnastics. “梁”=用于体操的长而直的木条。

The measurement of the width of a boat or ship, at its widest point. 最宽处测量船或船的宽度。

BEAR 熊 / 承担 / 承受

bear (n), bears (pl): A large mammal with a fur coat that lives in the wild, mostly in cold climates. 一种生活在野外的大型哺乳动物,大部分生活在寒冷的气候中。

A sharemarket trader who believes the market will drop. 一位认为市场会下跌的股市交易员。

"A bear market" = a stock market where prices are falling and expected to fall further. The opposite of a "bull" market. “熊市”=股票价格下跌且预计会进一步下跌的股票市场。 与“牛市”相反。

"Like a bear with a sore head" = to be in a bad mood, rude to other people. “就像一头头疼的熊”=心情不好,对别人无礼。

bear (v) 承担: To support something. 支持某事。

To endure something (to put up with, like the verb "stand" in Lesson 51). 忍受某事(忍受,就像第51课中的动词“立场”)。

To have the quality of something. 要有质量的东西。

To give birth to young children or animals, or to produce fruit. 生育幼儿或动物,或生产水果。

To carry something from one place to another. We say that the person or object being carried is "borne" - note the added -E to distinguish this from a birth. The spelling "born" is used for a birth! 从一个地方搬运到另一个地方。 我们说被携带的人或物体是“承受的” - 注意添加-E以区分这与出生。 拼写“天生”用于分娩!

"Born out of wedlock" = born to unmarried parents. “非婚生子女”=出生于未婚父母。

"To not bear thinking about" = to be too unpleasant to think about. “不要去思考”=太过不愉快的思考。

"To bear responsibility" = to be responsible if something bad happens. “承担责任”=如果发生不好的事情要负责任。

"To bear in mind" = to remember and think about something. “要记住”=记住并思考某事。

"To bear ill feeling" = to continue to dislike somebody. “忍受不舒服的感觉”=继续不喜欢某人。

"To bear witness" = to say that, from your experience, something is true. “见证”=说,从你的经验来看,事情是真的。

"To bear false witness" = to lie. “承担虚假见证”=撒谎。

"To bear fruit" = to produce a successful result. “结出果实”=产生成功的结果。

"To bear the scars" = to suffer ongoing mental pain from some unpleasant event. “承受伤疤”=遭受一些不愉快事件的持续精神痛苦。

"To bear up" = to be brave or determined, during a sad or difficult time. 在悲伤或困难时期,“承受”=勇敢或坚定。

"To bear down" = to work harder at some task. “坚持下去”=努力工作。

"To bear down on" = to move closer to someone or something, as though you are a threat. “要坚持”=靠近某人或某事,好像你是一个威胁。

bearish (adv): Like a bear, especially in a Stock Market. The opposite of "bullish".

Examples: The main species of bear are black, brown, grizzly and polar. 例子:熊的主要种类是黑色,棕色,灰熊和极地。

In the last week, the bears have been active on the Australian Stock Market. It has been a "bear market". 在上周,空头一直活跃在澳大利亚股市。 它一直是一个“熊市”。

block (n), blocks (pl): A hard object with straight sides, generally used to build things. "A wooden block", "a concrete block".

Blocks can be large and heavy, or small and light, like children's play building blocks. 具有直边的硬物,通常用于制造物品。 “木块”,“混凝土块”。积木既大又重,或小而轻,就像儿童游乐积木一样。

"An ice-block" = a small block of frozen water, put in cold drinks to keep them cold for a while. It is also a flavoured block of ice on a stick, that can be licked or eaten. “冰块”=一小块冷冻水,放入冷饮以保持冷藏一段时间。 它也是棒上的一种调味冰块,可以舔或吃。

block (v) 阻止: To prevent someone or something moving. 防止某人或某物移动。

"To get the boot" = to lose your job because of poor performance. “要开机”=因为表现不佳而失去工作。

CASE 外壳 / 例 / 案例

case (n), cases (pl): An example of something. 某事的一个例子。

A particular situation. 特殊情况。

A criminal problem that involves police and lawyers. 涉及警察和律师的犯罪问题。

A health or social problem that involves doctors and social workers. 涉及医生和社会工作者的健康或社会问题。

A type of box or container. A pillow-case, a bookcase, a briefcase. 一种盒子或容器。 枕套,书柜,公文包。

A box holding (typically) 12 bottles of drink. 一个盒子(通常)装有12瓶饮料。

Facts and reasons in support of something, or against something. 支持某事或某事的事实和理由。

In grammar, the "1st person", "2nd person" and so on forms of a verb, and other words. 在语法中,“第一人”,“第二人”等动词的形式,等等。

Note: "casing" 套管 is also a noun, meaning a container that holds or protects something. 也是名词,意思是容纳或保护某物的容器。

Examples: In 2019 there was a sudden increase in early cases of influenza. 例子:2019年,早期流感病例突然增加。

Normally we don't allow very young people to go to University, but in your case we shall make an exception. 通常我们不允许非常年轻的人去大学,但在你的情况下我们会例外。
