Lesson 132: Left and Right

In earlier lessons you learned the word RIGHT, and its opposite, WRONG. In this context, these two words mean "correct" and "incorrect".

In this lesson you will learn about another opposite to RIGHT, which is LEFT. In this context, RIGHT and LEFT mean opposite directions. These can be physical directions, or the directions in which people think or behave.
在本课中,您将了解另一个与 RIGHT 相对的,即 LEFT。 在这种情况下,RIGHT 和 LEFT 表示相反的方向。 这些可以是物理方向,也可以是人们思考或行为的方向。



LEFT 左 / 向左

left (n), lefts (pl): The left side or direction. If you face North, left is the direction to your West. 左侧或方向。 如果你面向北方,左边是你的西方方向。

Examples: The street you want is the second left. 示例:您想要的街道在左边第二条街。

Drive 5 kilometres and take two lefts. 行驶 5 公里并左转两个。


left (n, uncountable): In politics, the group of people who prefer to live in a socialist or communist society, usually about more government, higher taxes and more social security. 在政治上,指的是喜欢生活在社会主义或共产主义社会中的一群人,通常是关于更多的政府、更高的税收和更多的社会保障。

Example: The left in Australia is made up of the Labor Party and the Greens Party. 示例:澳大利亚的左翼由工党和绿党组成。


"the Far Left" = an extreme Left-wing group. “极左”=极左翼团体。

Example: The Far Left in Australia started as the Communist Party in 1920. 示例:澳大利亚的极左派始于 1920 年的共产党。


left (n), lefts (pl): In boxing, a punch delivered with the left fist. 在拳击中,用左拳发出一拳。

Example: David hit his opponent with two hard lefts. 示例:大卫用两个硬左击击中了他的对手。


left (adj): The opposite of right; towards the west when a person is facing north. 右的反面; 当一个人面朝北时,向西。

left (adj): In politics, preferring a socialist or communist society. 在政治上,更喜欢社会主义或共产主义社会。

left (adv): Towards the left side. 向着左侧。

left (v): The simple past tense and past participle of the verb "to leave". 动词“离开”的一般过去时和过去分词。

Example: Alice left home early to beat the traffic. 示例:Alice 早早离开家以避开交通。


left (v): Remaining. 其余的。

Examples: Everyone else had gone home; Betty was the only one left. 例子:其他人都回家了; 只剩下贝蒂了。

RIGHT 权利 / 右 / 向右

right (n), rights (pl): A direction. If you face North, right is the direction to your East. 一个方向。 如果你面向北方,右边是你东方的方向。
