Lesson 169: Less or Fewer?

Here are two words that many English speakers find difficult. 这里有两个对许多英语使用者来说很难的单词。


If you are speaking about something that can be measured as a quantity and is decreasing, you say "less". 如果您正在谈论某种可以作为数量来衡量并且正在减少的东西,您会说“更少”。

Examples: People are spending much less on restaurants recently. 例子:最近人们在餐馆上的花费少了很多。

Frank had less white paint in his workshop than he thought he did. 弗兰克车间里的白色油漆比他想象的要少。

It's much less windy tonight! 今晚的风小多了!

John's new car uses much less fuel than his old one did. 约翰的新车比他的旧车耗油少得多。

Muriel is deliberately using a bit less sugar in the cake she's baking. 穆里尔在烤蛋糕时故意少放了一点糖。


But if you are speaking about a number of things that can be counted and is decreasing, you say "fewer". 但是如果您谈论的是可计数的、并且数量正在减少的事物,您会说“更少”。

Examples: We have fewer problems with the new equipment. 例子:新设备给我们带来的问题更少了。

There were fewer people at the footy match than we expected. 观看足球比赛的人数比我们预期的要少。

A sign stated that the checkout was for 12 items or fewer. 标志显示结账时仅可购买 12 件或更少的商品。Have a look in your local supermarket and see if they get this correct! 去您当地的超市看看他们是否正确!

Shoppers have fewer choices when looking for fresh vegetables. 购物者在寻找新鲜蔬菜时的选择较少。
