Lesson 165: Understand, Believe, Think

"Think," "believe," and "understand" are all verbs about your thoughts, but they show different levels of certainty and detail.

“思考”、“相信”和“理解”都是关于你的想法的动词，但具有不同程度的确定性和细节。

THINK 思考

think (v), thinks, thinking, thought, was thought about / was thought of: The mental process of forming opinions or judgments based on reasoning and knowledge. 基于推理和知识形成观点或判断的心理过程。

Examples: Muriel thinks it's going to rain later. 例如：穆里尔认为待会儿会下雨。

Sandra thought the movie was overrated. 桑德拉认为这部电影被高估了。

Note: you can think something but not be certain about it. 注意：你可以思考某事，但不能确定。

BELIEVE 相信

believe (v), believes, believing, believed, was believed: Thinking with more faith or conviction. 更加坚信或确信地思考。

Examples: Alice believes in the power of hard work. 示例：爱丽丝相信努力工作的力量。

Many people believe in UFOs (= Unidentified Flying Objects). 许多人相信 UFO（不明飞行物）的存在。

Religious people believe in one or more gods. 宗教人士信仰一个或多个神。

Note: Believing means that you can accept something as true, without having evidence. 注意：相信意味着你可以接受某事为真，而无需证据。

UNDERSTAND 理解

understand (v), understands, understanding, understood, was understood: "Understand" refers to a deeper level of knowledge. “懂”是指更深层次的认识。

Examples: Fred understands the fire evacuation instructions now. 例如：弗雷德现在明白了火灾疏散指示。

Betty understands the importance of empathy. 贝蒂懂得同理心的重要性。

EXAMPLE 1 示例 1

Someone is explaining a complicated subject to you. 有人正在向您解释一个复杂的问题。

If you say, "I think I understand it," you're saying that you are not completely sure. 如果你说“我想我明白了”，那说明你并不完全确定。

If you say "I believe I understand it," you are still not completely sure. 如果你说“我相信我理解了”，那你仍然不完全确定。

If you say "I understand it," you're saying that you have no doubt. 如果你说“我明白”，那你就是在说你毫不怀疑。

You are discussing climate change with someone. 您正在与某人讨论气候变化。

Saying, "I think climate change is real," suggests that you're expressing an opinion based on available evidence or reasoning. 说“我认为气候变化是真实的”表明你正在根据现有证据或推理表达观点。

If you say "I believe climate change is real," you have a stronger conviction that climate change is real. 如果您说“我相信气候变化是真实存在的”，那么您就会更加坚信气候变化是真实存在的。

If you say "I understand climate change" this shows that you accept the concept and have a deeper comprehension of its causes, effects, and implications. 如果您说“我理解气候变化”，这表明您接受这个概念并且对其原因、影响和含义有更深的理解。
